Moka grew up in Kitakyushu surrounded by K-pop because her mother was a Big Bang fan, auditioned for Hybe Labels Japan while she was in middle school and moved to Belift Lab in order to compete on R U Next?. She trained for three years before debuting with Illit in 2024. Since April 2026 she has stepped back from activities twice for treatment of anxiety and excessive tension, and has been away from the group since June 19, 2026.

Wonhee was born in Busan and raised in Changwon, and was scouted by a Hybe employee at a Seoul bus station in February 2023. She joined Belift Lab as a trainee only a month before R U Next? began and still finished first in the show's final vote with close to 3.3 million votes. Since 2025 she has built a solo profile with an OST, a drama cameo, magazine covers and two of her own variety shows.

Iroha is the youngest member of Illit. An only child from Machida in Tokyo, she started dance classes at three and was scouted at a dance contest, moving to South Korea at eleven to train at JYP Entertainment before switching to Hybe a year later. Illit (아일릿, stylised in all caps) is a five-member girl group from Seoul put together by Belift Lab, a sub-label of Hybe, through the JTBC survival show R U Next?, which ran for ten episodes between June 30 and September 1, 2023. Six trainees were picked in the finale — two of them by public vote and four by the label's producers — but Youngseo's contract was ended by mutual agreement on January 5, 2024 and the group carried on as a five-piece of Yunah, Minju, Moka, Wonhee and Iroha. Their first appearance together was at the Acne Studios show during Paris Fashion Week on February 28, 2024, making them the first K-pop act to appear at the event before debuting; the debut EP Super Real Me followed on March 25, 2024, with Hybe chairman Bang Si-hyuk credited as a producer.

The lead single “Magnetic” became one of the biggest rookie hits of the decade. It topped South Korea's Circle Digital Chart, entered the UK Official Singles Chart at number 80 — a first for a K-pop group's debut single — and reached number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first debut song by a K-pop act ever to chart there. In Japan it became the fastest song by a girl group to pass 100 million plays on Oricon's streaming chart, taking the record from NiziU. Super Real Me sold more than 730,000 copies in Korea and peaked at number 93 on the Billboard 200. The second EP I'll Like You (October 2024, lead single “Cherish (My Love)”) and the third, Bomb (June 2025, lead single “Do the Dance”), each passed half a million Korean copies, and Bomb gave the group their first number one on the Circle Album Chart. Illit swept the rookie prizes of the 2024 season — Best New Artist at the MAMA Awards, New Artist of the Year at the Melon Music Awards, Rookie Artist of the Year at the Golden Disc Awards and the New Artist Award at the Japan Record Awards — while also spending their first year answering a public plagiarism accusation from NewJeans producer Min Hee-jin, which Belift Lab denied and countered with a defamation complaint.
Japan quickly became a second home market: the original Japanese song “Almond Chocolate” (February 2025) was written for a live-action film, the maxi single Toki Yo Tomare (September 2025) reached number two on the Oricon Singles Chart, and the second Japanese single “I Got Your Back” (July 2026), recorded with Jisoo and Momoka of Hana, reached number four. At home the single album Not Cute Anymore (November 2025) and the fourth EP Mamihlapinatapai (April 2026, lead single “It's Me”) both landed in the top three of the album chart, and in June 2026 the group released “Iconic by Mistake”, the first joint single by Hybe's Le Sserafim, Illit and Katseye. Illit played the Glitter Day concerts in Korea and Japan in 2025 and the Press Start tour through Korea, Japan and Hong Kong in 2026. Moka has been away from group activities on health grounds since June 19, 2026, following a first break in April and a short return at the end of May.
