A fall from a stage lift in December 2019 broke her pelvis and wrist and kept her off stage for a year; she returned on New Year's Day 2021 and has since released three solo EPs, hosted a nightly radio show, debuted in Got the Beat and in musical theatre.

Red Velvet (레드벨벳) is a five-member girl group assembled in Seoul by SM Entertainment, made up of Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri. The name splits the group in two — a bold, colourful “red” side and a smoother, more grown-up “velvet” one — and nearly every release since has leaned one way or the other. Seulgi was scouted first, in 2007, followed by Irene in 2009 and Yeri in 2011, while Wendy and Joy came through SM's global auditions in Canada and Seoul in 2012. Four of the five were shown to the public in advance through the trainee project SM Rookies; only Joy was held back until the line-up was revealed on July 29, 2014. The quartet performed for the first time on KBS's Music Bank on August 1, 2014 and put out the digital single “Happiness” three days later, SM's first girl group in five years. Yeri joined on March 11, 2015, days before the first EP Ice Cream Cake turned the group into a quintet.

“Ice Cream Cake” was the commercial breakthrough, and the debut studio album The Red followed in September 2015 behind “Dumb Dumb”. From there the group alternated concepts: the R&B EP The Velvet (2016), then “Russian Roulette” and “Rookie”, then the summer EP The Red Summer, whose single “Red Flavor” became their first number one on the Gaon Digital Chart in July 2017 and fixed their reputation as Korea's summer group. Perfect Velvet and its 2018 reissue The Perfect Red Velvet produced “Peek-a-Boo” and “Bad Boy”, the latter named Billboard's best K-pop song of 2018, while “Power Up” from the summer EP Summer Magic delivered their first perfect all-kill the same year. In April 2018 they performed in Pyongyang at the inter-Korean concert Spring Is Coming, the first SM act to play in North Korea since Shinhwa in 2003, and later that year received a commendation from South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The three-part ReVe Festival series ran through 2019 and closed with “Psycho”, which took the digital bonsang at the 35th Golden Disc Awards.
Group activity stopped after Wendy fractured her pelvis and wrist falling from a stage during rehearsals for the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejeon; the five reunited on 1 January 2021 and released the EP Queendom that August. Every member has since built a separate catalogue — the sub-unit Irene & Seulgi, Wendy's three solo EPs, Joy's remake album Hello, Seulgi's 28 Reasons and Accidentally on Purpose, and Irene's Like a Flower and Biggest Fan — while the group carried on with The ReVe Festival 2022, the Japanese studio album Bloom, the third Korean studio album Chill Kill (2023) and the EP Cosmic (2024). SM's exclusive contracts with Wendy and Yeri ended on April 4, 2025, though both stayed in the group; Seulgi had re-signed in August 2023 and Joy did so in January 2025. After a two-year gap the group returned on August 3, 2026 with the summer EP Velvet Summer and the single “Surfin' Boy”, written by Joy. Thirteen of their albums have reached number one in South Korea, a run that already made them the girl group with the most chart-topping albums when the twelfth arrived in 2022.
