NewJeans (뉴진스) is a girl group formed in Seoul by ADOR, the Hybe sub-label incorporated on November 12, 2021 with the art director Min Hee-jin as its chief executive and the group’s producer. Preparations had begun in 2019 as a joint Hybe and Source Music project, with global auditions that autumn and a second round between December 2021 and January 2022; the line-up was fixed in March 2022. Minji had been the face of the 2019 audition campaign, Danielle passed a Source Music audition in July 2020 after training at YG Entertainment, Haerin was street-cast in late 2019, Hanni was the only recruit from the Plus Global Auditions, and Hyein had already released music at nine with the children’s group U.SSO Girl. Instead of a conventional roll-out, ADOR posted the music video for “Attention” with no warning on July 22, 2022; the members’ names were revealed the next day with “Hype Boy”, and the self-titled EP arrived on August 1. It sold more than a million copies — the best-selling debut record by a K-pop female act since Circle Chart began measuring in 2011 — and the group swept the rookie prizes at the Melon Music Awards, the Golden Disc Awards, the Korean Music Awards, the Seoul Music Awards, the Asia Artist Awards and The Fact Music Awards.

“Ditto”, released on December 19, 2022 ahead of the single album OMG, held number one on the Circle Digital Chart for thirteen weeks and became the group’s first entry on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. The second EP Get Up (July 2023) entered the Billboard 200 at number one, making NewJeans the second K-pop girl group to top that chart after Blackpink, and its three singles — “Super Shy”, “Cool with You” and “ETA” — charted on the Hot 100 simultaneously, a first for a K-pop female act. The same year brought the Coca-Cola single “Zero”, the League of Legends world championship anthem “Gods”, two drama soundtrack songs and the remix album NJWMX. NewJeans became the first girl group in twelve years to win Artist of the Year at the MAMA Awards and the first female act to take that title at the MAMA and Melon Music Awards in the same year, and the IFPI ranked them the eighth best-selling recording artist worldwide for 2023. Two more single albums followed in 2024: How Sweet in May and Supernatural in June, the latter built on a Pharrell Williams-produced interpolation and doubling as the group’s Japanese debut, celebrated with a two-night fan meeting at the Tokyo Dome.

In April 2024 a shareholder dispute erupted between Hybe’s executives and Min Hee-jin, who was removed as ADOR’s chief executive on August 27 that year. The members backed her publicly, and on October 15, 2024 Hanni testified before the National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee about how the group had been treated. On November 28, 2024 all five declared their exclusive contracts terminated; ADOR denied any breach and went to court. The members announced the new name “NJZ” on February 7, 2025 and headlined ComplexCon Hong Kong under it on March 23 before announcing an open-ended pause; they dropped the name in April after an injunction was upheld for ADOR, and the Seoul High Court rejected their appeal on June 18, 2025. On October 30, 2025 the Seoul Central District Court ruled the contracts valid until 2029. Haerin and Hyein agreed to return to the label on November 12, Hanni on December 29 — the same day ADOR terminated Danielle’s contract and, a day later, sued her, a member of her family and Min for ₩43 billion, a claim reduced to ₩33 billion in June 2026. ADOR said in May 2026 that talks with Minji were moving in a positive direction, and on July 22, 2026 it published “2026 Summer of NewJeans”, the first group content in sixteen months, featuring all four remaining members — while stressing that no decision on future activities had been made. Haerin and Hyein resumed individual magazine work in August 2026; the group has released no new music since June 2024.
