aespa (에스파, written in lowercase and also stylised æspa) is a four-member girl group assembled by SM Entertainment in Seoul: leader Karina, Giselle, Winter and Ningning. The company announced the project on October 26, 2020 — its first new girl group since Red Velvet in 2014 — and unveiled the members one at a time from October 27, beginning with Winter and ending with Giselle. The name joins the letters æ, standing for “Avatar X Experience”, with the word “aspect”, and the group launched around a storyline in which every member meets her own virtual counterpart in a digital world; the fandom is called MY, taken from “my precious friends”. The debut single “Black Mamba” arrived on November 17, 2020 and its video collected 21.4 million views in a day, then the most ever for a K-pop group’s debut clip. A first music show trophy followed on Inkigayo on January 17, 2021.

The 2021 single “Next Level” made the group a chart fixture — number two on the Gaon/Circle Digital Chart and Song of the Year at the 19th Korean Music Awards — and the first EP Savage (October 2021) entered the Billboard 200 at number 20, the highest placing for a K-pop girl group’s debut record at the time. The second EP Girls (July 2022) passed a million copies in its first week and reached number three in the United States; My World (May 2023) went beyond two million copies in Korea. Along the way aespa became the third K-pop girl group to play Coachella, spoke and performed at a United Nations sustainable-development forum in July 2022, and in August 2023 became the fastest K-pop act to headline the Tokyo Dome. The first studio album Armageddon (May 2024) was led by “Supernova”, which topped the Circle Digital Chart for eleven weeks and won Song of the Year at both the 2024 MAMA Awards and the 2024 Melon Music Awards, where the group also took Artist of the Year.
The fifth EP Whiplash (October 2024) delivered the group’s first Billboard Global 200 top ten, and days earlier the four members had released their solo tour songs as the digital single album Synk: Parallel Line — Karina’s “Up” went on to win a Show! Music Core trophy on its own. 2025 brought the million-selling single album Dirty Work, the Capitol-partnered EP Rich Man and a second set of solo tracks on Synk: Aexis Line. In 2026 aespa put out their second studio album Lemonade, trailed by “WDA (Whole Different Animal)” with G-Dragon and led by the title track, followed in July with their first Japanese EP Kiss n Tell, and opened the Synk: Complaexity tour at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul in August.
