Kep1er (케플러) was formed by CJ ENM through Mnet's 2021 reality competition Girls Planet 999, which narrowed 99 trainees from China, Japan and South Korea down to a nine-member lineup revealed on October 22, 2021. The name combines "Kep", for catching a dream, with the numeral "1" for the members uniting as one, and nods to astronomer Johannes Kepler and the show's planetary theme. Co-managed by WakeOne and Swing Entertainment, the group debuted on January 3, 2022 with the EP First Impact and lead single "Wa Da Da", which sold roughly 400,000 copies, topped the Circle Album Chart and reached the Billboard Global 200 — a start that earned Kep1er rookie honors from Asia Artist Awards and Seoul Music Awards. A Japanese debut followed that September with the single "Fly-Up" ("Wing Wing"), certified gold by the RIAJ.

Over 2022 and 2023 the group released the EPs Doublast, Troubleshooter, Lovestruck! and Magic Hour while touring Japan, but by mid-2023 the members' original two-and-a-half-year contracts were approaching expiry. On May 30, 2024, WakeOne confirmed that seven of the nine members had renewed; Mashiro and Kang Ye-seo left the group after a run of Japanese concerts in Yokohama on July 15, 2024. Weeks earlier, Kep1er had released its first Japanese studio album, Kep1going, and in June 2024 its first Korean studio album, Kep1going On, whose lead single "Shooting Star" was later named among the best K-pop songs of 2024 by Dazed and Billboard. Klap Entertainment joined WakeOne as co-manager that September, following a reorganization of Swing Entertainment, and the seven-member lineup's first release, the EP Tipi-tap, arrived that November.
Kep1er released the Japanese EP Against the World in April 2025 and the Korean EP Bubble Gum that August, though member Seo Young-eun had already stepped back from promotions that July to focus on her health; on March 6, 2026, WakeOne and Klap announced her departure, and the group continued as six members with the EP Crack Code that March 31. In 2026 Shen Xiaoting made her solo debut with the single "Legend" while continuing to promote with the group, and Kep1er contributed the single "I Stay" to the soundtrack of the animated film Ne Zha 2.
