Chaeyoung modelled for a children's magazine before taking dance lessons and passing the JYP Entertainment audition at thirteen. fromis_9 was formed through Mnet's 2017 survival program Idol School. The nine finalists were selected on September 29, 2017, introduced the pre-debut single "Glass Shoes" that November, and officially debuted with the EP To. Heart on January 24, 2018. Their name combines "from Idol School" with the idea of a promise to their audience, while the underscore remains part of the group's official styling.

The group moved from Stone Music Entertainment to Off The Record Entertainment in 2018 and then to Pledis Entertainment in 2021. Jang Gyuri left when her contract ended in July 2022. After the remaining eight members' Pledis contracts concluded at the end of 2024, Song Hayoung, Park Jiwon, Lee Chaeyoung, Lee Nagyung and Baek Jiheon signed with ASND Entertainment. ASND and Pledis later reached an agreement that allowed the five members to continue using the fromis_9 name; Lee Saerom, Roh Jisun and Lee Seoyeon did not join the new agency.
Across releases such as "LOVE BOMB," "WE GO," "DM," "Stay This Way" and "Supersonic," fromis_9 developed a recognizable strain of melodic, rhythm-forward pop rather than relying on one fixed concept. The five-member era began on record with From Our 20's in 2025, followed by "White Memories," a Japanese debut EP and the 2026 studio album Glow ME. Their catalog also shows growing member participation in lyric writing and composition, making the transition between agencies a continuation of the group's musical identity rather than a restart.
